How much does a keynote speaker cost?
What actually drives a speaking fee, and how to brief so the budget buys the right thing.

The short answer
Keynote speaker fees vary widely by profile, format and market, from low four figures for newer specialists to substantial five- and six-figure fees for globally recognised names. The fee reflects expertise, audience draw, preparation, customisation and travel — not stage time, which is the smallest part of the work.
Key takeaways
- Stage time is the smallest part of a speaking fee.
- Profile, format, customisation, travel and rights drive price.
- Agree recording and reuse rights before the event, not after.
- Bundling sessions on one travel day stretches a budget furthest.
What you are actually paying for
Stage time is the visible part and the smallest cost. The fee covers briefing calls, research into the audience and sector, writing and rehearsing a customised talk, travel days, and the reputational weight the speaker's name brings to your marketing.
That last element is often the highest-value component. A recognised speaker sells tickets, attracts sponsors and raises the perceived status of the whole event — which is why the same content commands very different fees depending on who delivers it.
The variables that move the price
Rather than a fixed rate card, most speakers price each engagement against a set of variables.
- Profile
- Author status, media presence, awards and audience draw.
- Format
- Keynote, half-day workshop, full-day hosting or a multi-session package.
- Customisation
- How much research and bespoke content the brief requires.
- Travel
- Domestic, international, time zones and number of days away.
- Rights
- Recording, streaming, internal reuse and content licensing.
- Audience
- Corporate and association events are priced differently from charity and education.
What is usually included — and what is not
A fee normally includes briefing calls, a customised talk, delivery and a short Q&A. Travel, accommodation and transfers are commonly billed separately or covered by the host.
Recording rights are the most frequently missed item. If you intend to film the session, stream it or reuse clips internally, say so in the brief — permissions are far cheaper to agree upfront than to negotiate after the event.
How to get more from the same budget
Bundle formats. A keynote plus a workshop, a VIP session or a podcast recording on the same travel day costs materially less than booking those separately, because travel is the expensive constraint.
Be flexible on date and location where you can, brief early so preparation is efficient, and be honest about budget from the first email. Dawn's speaking topics, formats and enquiry process are set out on the keynote speaking page.

Related questions
Do speakers charge for travel?
Usually yes, as an expense rather than a margin: flights, accommodation, transfers and occasionally a day rate for extended travel. International bookings cost more than domestic ones largely because of the number of days the trip consumes.
Are speaker fees negotiable?
Often, but around structure rather than value. Multi-session days, several events booked together, favourable dates, content rights and marketing collaboration all give both sides room to move without simply discounting the work.
Do speakers ever waive fees?
Sometimes for charity, education or strategically valuable platforms. It is worth asking, provided the request is specific about the audience, the exposure and why the platform matters — a blanket request for free speaking rarely succeeds.
