What Does it Really Take to Make A Million?

What does making a million really demand of you, beyond a bigger revenue target? Reaching that milestone means examining how you value your time, what financial security would make possible, and whether the business you are building supports the life you actually want. The ambition matters, but so do the everyday decisions, priorities and sacrifices behind it.

In this episode, Business Growth Coach Dawn McGruer draws on her own journey to explore the strategic and personal shifts involved in growing a successful business. She considers delegation, consistent cash flow and the importance of making decisions as the person you aspire to become, alongside the less visible work that success still requires. She also challenges reliance on social media, turning attention towards diverse revenue streams, effective marketing and the beliefs that can hold growth back.

For female founders scaling towards seven figures, this is an invitation to look beyond the number and question how your business operates. Listen for a clearer perspective on protecting your time, aligning strategy with your goals and pursuing financial success without building a business you resent.

Welcome to episode 136 of Dawn of a New Era with myself, Dawn McGruer, the Business Growth Coach. And today we're going to be talking about creating a successful business and reaching the milestone of making a million. Now, we all know that that requires a significant combination of strategic planning, mindset shifts, and also embracing certain realities about time and priorities. I really want to share from my heart and my soul what my journey has been like, and I want to share some of the key points that we need to consider because These involve shifts around mindset, and absolutely there will be sacrifices that we need to look at along the way.

As a business owner, we have to deeply, deeply consider what it is in terms of the use of our time. What is the best use of our time? So the first thing I want to talk about is outsourcing and delegating, and I want you to recognize that your time is your most valuable asset above everything. Now, this mindset is crucial, especially if you are someone who really wants to scale your business.

Now, that could be five figures, four figures, six, seven, eight, nine. It doesn't matter. But we have to understand that time is 100% your most valuable asset. If you learn nothing from today's podcast or take anything away, please take that one statement.

This should sit with you strongly in everything you do, and it means that you have to be willing to pay a cleaner or outsource tasks that do not directly contribute to your core business goals. And that sometimes feels hard. You know, we still feel that we need to be doing a lot of the day-to-day, the mundane tasks, and to some degree, we will have to do some of them. But by freeing up your time, you can focus on what truly matters in driving your business forward.

Now, next up is financial security and certainty. So for many business owners, and you may be able to relate to this, the goal is not the million itself, but what that financial security can provide: you know, freedom, peace of mind, and the ability to make decisions without fear. And that, if you have been in business for any period of time, you will know cash flow, money is something that will give you absolute sleepless nights. It will give you stress.

It will give you anxiety. And this is something, if we can get solved in our business. This is absolutely the biggest game changer in your life, because every single client I work with in the first 90 days, all we focus on is cash, consistent cash, certainty, financial growth. Why?

Because once you have that, you have this unshakable belief, this confidence, a clarity. You show up in a way that you could never before if you have that heavy weight on you. Now, the shifts that you make once that is in place, you make different decisions. And this brings me on to the next one, which is living your new reality.

So actively embodying the million-pound version of yourself in every action that you take. And I mean this. This means making decisions and showing up as a successful person you aspire to be, even before you reach those financial goals. And you need to self-check.

You need to look at what you are doing. Have you fallen into the trap of sitting and watching Netflix where your new reality is doing something else? Are you scrolling endlessly on social media when you could be doing something that is causing a ripple effect and moving you further towards your goal? The next one is embracing the unpleasant tasks.

As I said, your time is your most valuable asset, but we have to understand that even successful people have to do unglamorous things. And these are the foundational tasks that are part of your journey, but this can make success even sweeter. Some of the things that we talk about that we do day to day that we're not seeing on social media, you know, it could be walking the dogs. That's not a chore.

That should be something that you embrace and start to love. Make these tasks into something that you enjoy. Switch things up. Try and move the things that you hate, and then try and slow time down so that you can experience some of the day-to-day tasks that you once saw as mundane, but as treasured memories.

Now, the dangers of social media. We have to We have to address this, of course we do. Authenticity over FOMO. This is it.

Do not fall prey to what you see online. Your business should be able to stand on its own, and relying solely on social media is not sustainable. But having diverse revenue streams that provide stability and reduces fear-driven decisions, this is the key. And this is something that I am so passionate about because my business does not need social media to survive, and that is a brave statement to make in this era.

But I have built my business in a way that if social media disappeared tomorrow, it would still stand strong. And this is a big shift because a lot of you will relate to content marketing and social media fatigue. You feel like you're on this constant cycle, you're having to show up all of the time. There are different ways of marketing.

You can create how you show up as a business owner. And then overcoming limiting beliefs. So addressing self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and self-worth issues. This can be a massive catalyst for growth.

And when we experience a shift in mindset, this can profoundly change your whole business trajectory. So. In summary, I really want you to focus on the core factors. Try and cancel out the white noise.

Think about what it really means to grow the business. And remember, yes, I'm talking about reaching that million pound milestone, but this could be any milestone in your business. Not everybody strives to hit the big numbers, and it doesn't matter. We designed our businesses so we can choose what our goals are.

So focus on mindset and environment. Evaluate if tasks feel overwhelmingly difficult. If they do, it might be because you're not addressing the environment and habits effectively. So changing your surroundings can help change unhealthy habits.

Clarity on money goals. Be clear on financial goals and true to yourself in your business model, because many businesses have totally unachievable, unsustainable, and unscalable models. And then review messaging and marketing. Assess whether your marketing is working in attracting ideal clients.

Quite often it's not. Often only a small proportion of your marketing efforts are even effective. So focus on what's driving revenue and profit. And then strategy and design.

Delegate tasks, declutter processes, and redesign your business strategy to align with life goals. This is ensuring then that you are actually building a business that you're happy with, rather than one that you actually resent. And then understanding your why. Reflect on why you set up the business and what your mission and vision is, and ensure everything you do aligns with your goals and propels you towards true success.

So my final thoughts on today's podcast is: life is finite. Make it count. You know, we only have approximately 4,000 weeks in our lifetime. That's crazy.

So make every week count by dreaming big and taking concrete steps towards making those dreams a reality. Dream big and make it happen. So have an amazing week, and remember, focusing on these aspects can guide you towards not just financial success, but also a fulfilling and sustainable business. Business and life.
