A Day in the Life of a Multi 7-Figure Business Owner

What does a multi-seven-figure business owner’s day look like when the business no longer takes priority over everything else? Behind the morning routine and carefully planned diary is a more revealing story: the move from late nights, burnout and feast-or-famine trading towards a working life built around focus, wellbeing and consistent progress.

In this solo episode, Dawn McGruer shares how she structures her days across four businesses, from protected morning time and 90-minute work blocks to client calls and daily strategy meetings. She explores why her environment matters, how she makes space for herself during the week, and why small, daily adjustments have become such an important part of business growth.

For female founders scaling towards seven figures, this is an honest look at the habits and decisions behind the business, rather than an idealised timetable to copy. You’ll be invited to rethink where your energy goes and how to build a working week that supports both your ambition and your life, without expecting every day to run perfectly.

Welcome to episode 91 with myself, Dawn McGruer. In this special episode of Dawn of a New Era, I talk about all sorts of different things. In particular, we're going to focus on a day in the life of a multi-seven-figure business owner. I cover all sorts of things from marketing, motivation, mindset, models, and money.

And today we're going to wrap them all up into one juicy episode. The reason I want to cover this, I want to share with you a bit of the behind the scenes of what I do and how my day looks. Now I have four businesses. I've got a directorship in some.

I'm shareholder of others. I've got American business, and I'm always asked, how do I keep a handle on what I'm doing? How do I juggle all of the different things? It's taken a long time, and, you know, when I talk about this, I kind of look back and laugh because my days have changed and evolved so much.

So it's not all sunshine and rainbows, and it definitely wasn't in the start. Now I started my business at 21, and my agency literally has been going since then, and I'm 43. Now I went from sort of a feast and famine, and I kind of made some pretty epic fails along the way, but I've grown my businesses. So yeah, it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

And to get where I am now, it has been a lot of hard work and dedication. The great thing is now that 43, going into my 44th year, is I know the pitfalls to avoid and the best ways to overcome the challenges: building solid foundations, attracting and converting customers on autopilot, and getting consistent cash flow into a business. Now I've worked my way from a zero following, and now I'm a multi-seven-figure business owner. But as I say, it didn't happen overnight.

Now, my days, first of all, were around rushing. They were really not focused on self-care in the early days. It was all about my business. I was burning myself out.

I was working late at night. I wasn't getting enough sleep. I wasn't looking after me. And I just wish, if I could give myself advice back, you know, when I was 21, to really look at me first.

Because if you don't have that, it affects your whole motivation, your mindset, your health, everything. Now, the great news is that my life has changed a lot. And especially since lockdown, I guess I managed to reprioritize, restructure, really look at what I was doing. So now, I wake up around about 6:30, feed the puppies, Paddy and Murphy, who are little black whippets.

They are 10 months old now, and we go for a walk. Now, they pretty much determine when I get up because Paddy comes to the bottom of the stairs and cries for his breakfast. Even at weekends, I have to get up at that time. So me and my partner take turns, but it's generally me who will go down because I give in sooner.

After that, I go on my treadmill for 30 minutes. I do a bit of a walk, a bit of a run. My partner's on his Peloton next to me. We've got music going or I'm watching TV, and that really sets me up for the day.

It's such a small amount of time, 30 minutes, but it's so, so fulfilling. I can't describe to you the feeling of having this morning routine in place. Even my partner describes it as game-changing because once I've done the treadmill, during lockdown, like most people, we invested in a hot tub. So I pop my swimsuit on, get my dry robe on, and jump in the hot tub for 30 minutes.

It's a hydrotherapy tub, and you can put eucalyptus in and all sorts of different amazing aromatherapy and essential oils, and it just makes me feel so grounded and so relaxed. And it's weird because my word for this year is enrichment, and this whole process, this morning routine, really, really adds to that experience. Once I've done that, I get showered, I get dressed. I always put my makeup on.

I've always loved putting my makeup on. Lots of people who say, you know, even if I'm working from home, why would you do that? It just makes me feel good. And I use a skincare routine as well called ZO, which is Zen Obagi.

And honestly, I have never had more compliments on my skin than when I started using this particular product range. Once I've done that and I'm all set for the day, I definitely just want to finish off with feeding my body. So I never had breakfast. Literally for years and years and years, I never had breakfast.

Anyone who's listening to this who is into, you know, health and nutrition, you honestly would have killed me because I just didn't want it. I wouldn't eat all day until dinner, okay? So now I have either boiled eggs or a smoothie before starting work around about 8:30. Then I'm ready for work, and I probably do maybe two or three days a week in the office.

And I have to say, our office is absolutely divine. The reason I chose it is I viewed so many offices. Even my first office, I painted bright yellow, metallic bright yellow, and because it was an agency, it just kind of had this really vibrant, edgy kind of vibe. Then we moved offices, and it was a more formalized kind of training environment.

We had a training room, reception, offices, etc. It was still modern, but I always felt that it just didn't really inspire me. It didn't bring out the creativity, and I always preferred working from different spaces. So we moved offices last year, and I work from the most gorgeous, gorgeous place that has like a co-working area.

It also has this beautiful restaurant. And in the summer, the whole back of the building, the roof retracts, so you can even work outside. And there's a brilliant area that I can actually position my laptop and still see everything whilst being outside. And it is surrounded by green fields.

I mean, the views are just beautiful. And I find that just as soon as I arrive, I feel like it sets me up for success. The whole feeling of just working in this gorgeous, luxurious environment with beautiful views, it just energizes me. As I say, I'm sort of in the office two, three days a week, traveling or going to events for one or two, and I always end my week working from home on a Friday.

I just love it. I just like the whole kind of not having to get up and go somewhere. I mean, obviously, if there's client work or, you know, something changes, I'll go. But Fridays, I've always liked being local, and I finish early.

So I have Wellness Wednesday, which means on Wednesday afternoons, I always focus on something to do for me, and it could be like a massage or it could be a facial. It could just even be nothing, or going to see my friends or my family or going for a coffee or something with my mum. And what I love about that is that I used to try and bundle in all my personal appointments. Now I build them into my calendar, and Wellness Wednesday is focused on me, not just like trying to get to the dentist or pick up a prescription or go to a doctor's or, you know, all of the tasks.

I build them into my day, and I work through those every single day, so it doesn't feel like they're all clustered into one. And then on a Friday, I have free time Friday, and in the afternoon I will do something exciting. I always like to have something exciting in my diary, something fun that I can really own and look after and look forward to. So that's my kind of working week.

My day, once I've kind of started work at 8:30, I spend most of the day kind of using a time blocking process. It's always worked better for me because, you know, if I'm working on clients, I tend to always push their work to the front and focus on how we're going to develop strategies for what they're doing to grow their businesses. Clients for me come first, so it's always the thing that I start on, and I do 90 minutes, and then I have a break, and then I just go and maybe have a walk, or I just go and cuddle the puppies for five minutes. I just do something that just re-energizes me and resets, and then go back to work.

And I don't take masses of time, but I used to sit at my desk, like, forever. I could sit for hours, literally hours, because it's my business, it's my passion. You know, why wouldn't I? You know, I saw my business as my everything, and I was really neglectful of actually looking into how I could be performing in a better way.

And just by moving around and just getting a little bit more exercise in the day, I feel so much better. Now, I also invested in an adjustable desk so I can work stood up, and I can reduce it down to sit down again. So I couldn't stand all day, but I can do sort of like a 30-minute interval without my posture going bad or leaning on one foot, et cetera, et cetera. And one thing that I have started doing at my desk is I wear a little posture corrector, and I just stick it on underneath my top, and you can't see it.

It's really super comfy, but it makes me sit properly, and I cannot tell you the difference even in one week. I used to get a bit of back pain and lower back pain tightness. I don't get that now. So that, I think, cost me like £20 on Amazon, and, you know, it's a game changer because it's your health, you know, it's your whole posture.

So what do I do then? Well.

Around about lunchtime, which is about one o'clock, I take a break so I can get something healthy, maybe do another walk, etc. with the dogs. And then I'm back in until around about four o'clock, and I'm working on content and one-to-one calls at that point. And at four, we always have a meeting where we talk about our strategies for the next month and beyond.

And across the businesses, we have around about 17 people. They're not all working at the same time. Some are on projects, you know, some people are full-time, and it depends basically what we have on for the expertise, etc. that we need.

We discuss how we can grow the business further, and I think what's so important is because these are daily. Biggest change I've seen is that the team and the people that we work with, you know, so different suppliers, agencies, etc., we're all on the same page, and we're just living and breathing the vision. And I think because we're not trying to deliver a whole month of, you know, this is what we're going to do, we're tweaking the strategy and looking at things in 24-hour increments.

Honestly, that has been a huge factor in the growth of our business. So when we discuss how we can grow our business even further and enhance things like our retreats and our mastermind to get even better results for clients and to give them a more immersive, enriched experience working with us, it's always exciting. But because we're making these incremental shifts, it all feels quite light because we're kind of delivering what we're going to do, we're actioning it, we're planning it. It all feels like we're in this kind of small steady steps that we're building this kind of momentum that delivers such vast, vast results.

That's just a glimpse into some of my world, and I think it's important to share because, you know, sometimes it doesn't look like that. Sometimes it does get unbalanced. Sometimes it does go off piece. And sometimes I won't do all of the morning routine.

I'll cut bits out. But, you know, 80% of the time, that's what I'm doing. So I have also just embarked on my Instagram and TikTok journey. I've always been a LinkedIn person.

I maxed out at 30,000 connections. I'm on my way to growing up to 100,000 followers. But Instagram and TikTok, I literally wanted to master one social channel and move to the next. So come and join me because I do share quite a lot of the behind the scenes.

You know, what does our mastermind look like? What does our retreat look like? What is it that we do with our clients, and what does that look like? Because often that's the most exciting thing.

You know, when we share client success stories and case studies, we share this through Instagram and TikTok. Top videos. I also give a lot of value. I try and give as many sort of tips, tools and insights that I can to my audience because that's always helped me grow my social channels over on LinkedIn.
