3 Ways To Improve Self-Talk, Self-Worth And Self-Promotion
Would you speak to someone else the way you speak to yourself? When negative assumptions go unchallenged and achievements go unacknowledged, it becomes harder to recognise your value and communicate it confidently. Improving self-talk, self-worth and self-promotion starts with noticing those patterns and choosing a more constructive response.
In this solo episode, Dawn McGruer explores three connected areas of change: challenging negative thoughts, acknowledging your achievements and taking ownership of your personal brand. She shares practical approaches, from journalling and gratitude to self-compassion and making space each week to share your progress. Dawn also examines how to shape an elevator pitch around the people you are speaking to, focusing on the impact of your work rather than simply listing what your business does.
For female founders who downplay their accomplishments or struggle to articulate their value, this episode offers a practical starting point. Listen to shift from self-criticism and hesitant promotion towards a kinder inner dialogue, clearer positioning and greater confidence in sharing what you have achieved.

Welcome to episode 137 of Dawn of a New Era with myself, Dawn McGruer. Now, today we're going to be talking about improving our self-talk, looking at improving our self-worth, and also improving the way that we promote ourselves. This is all aimed at really overcoming mindset barriers and false beliefs that every single one of us has, and we would never talk to others in the way that we talk to ourselves. So we have to make some shifts.
So, number one, if we look at identifying and challenging these negative thoughts, what I want you to do is start by becoming really aware of your negative self-talk patterns and write them down when they occur. Keep a journal so that you can see when and where they are arising, and then challenge these thoughts by questioning their validity. Are they based on facts or just false assumptions? And replace negative statements with positive affirmations.
So, for example, change I can't do this to I am capable and will give it my absolute best. And also practicing gratitude can really help here. So you could try beginning a daily gratitude journal, writing down at least three things that you're grateful for each day. And a focus on gratitude really helps shift attention away from these negative thoughts and helps develop a more positive inner dialogue.
Now, number two, building self-worth. This is a biggie. Every single client I've ever worked with has struggled with this at some point or another in their lives, or are even still struggling at the point that I meet them. But we have to acknowledge our achievements, and this is a big part of it.
So if you start a list of past achievements, regardless of size, and review them regularly, then what we want to do is celebrate small victories to reinforce the value of your efforts and accomplishments. Now, even just by writing these down and becoming aware of them, we start to lean into all of the amazing things that we've done in our lives. And then self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding as you would a good friend.
We are so hard on ourselves, and we take in so much of the outside world and expectations that, you know, we're putting on ourselves, no one else's. We want to engage in self-compassion exercises such as gentle breathing and supportive self-speak, especially during challenging times. And we need to care for ourselves and care for our minds. And then last but not least, number three, enhancing self-promotion.
So develop a personal brand and identify your unique skills, values, and what you want to be known for, and consistently communicate this brand across professional platforms like your LinkedIn or your Instagram or your website. And what we're talking about here is that we have to be our own PR. We have to promote ourselves every single week and pick a day. You know, it could even be just sort of, you know, celebrating Wins Wednesday, like all of the things that you've done.
It could be something to do with a new hire. It could be new offices. It could be a new award. It could be a new product.
Whatever it is, you need to put to the outside world how much you are scaling and growing, because perception is everything, and no one will do this for you. Now, networking and communicating. Confidently. Now, this is something I see a lot when I'm at public events, and one of the things I want you to think about is being so super clear and confident on your elevator pitch and your skills and experience.
And what we want to do is really switch the conversation so it's about them and why what you do would impact them. So instead of me, you know, meeting somebody at an event and saying, Hi, I'm Dawn. I've got an academy, I've got an agency, I've got a property business, I've got a coaching business, people just tune out. They don't care.
You know, at that point, they've just met you. They don't know anything about you. So what we have to do is think about how we can position a statement that would really help them. So if I was in a networking event that was relevant maybe to my academy, I would say, Oh, hi, I'm Dawn, and they'd say, What do you do?
What I would say is, I empower my clients to master the world of online marketing and social media to grow their businesses. Now, my academy does digital marketing qualifications, and that's far more exciting than just saying they do qualifications, because what it does is it opens up a conversation, and that's what we're looking to do. We're looking to get people intrigued, and you have to lean into thinking about what is your edge and wow. These are statements that are points of parity against someone else, or statements of wow.
These are often, you know, numerical stats. You know, like if I said to someone, Oh yeah, and we've got a 99% pass rate, this would be super exciting for somebody in that world. Now, I couldn't use that if I was showing up for my coaching business because it wouldn't be relevant. I might say, My coaching business, I empower my clients to become growth coaches through the world's only neuroscience-backed qualification, something like that.
So it really depends on the audience. Now, if I was meeting founders, again, I wouldn't be pitching a qualification. So you have to know your crowd, you have to know your audience, and you have to pick the elevator pitch that relates to The relevant part of the business and not just the business, because that is not compelling and it's not memorable. So when you attend networking events to build these relationships and you want to be able to kind of step in there and be able to confidently share your work and accomplishments and be proud of it, often we shy away from it and we try and dull ourselves down.
This is not great promotion. We have to own our own PR and be proud of what we've done. Now, these strategies can really help dismantle mindset barriers, and they'll help cultivate a more positive self-view. And then this in turn helps to empower you to communicate your worth more effectively.
So it really starts to change and we start to stand in our power more. And remember, change takes time and persistence. So keep practicing these techniques and let me know how you get on.
