7 Steps to 7 Figures in 7 Months
What if scaling your business starts not with doing more, but with building a model that supports the life you want? Reaching seven figures is the ambition explored here, but the real focus is alignment: setting realistic client targets, understanding your numbers and directing your energy towards the actions that move your business forward.
In this solo episode, business growth coach Dawn McGruer shares the seven steps behind her experience of growing a business from zero to 100K a month in seven months. She explores outside guidance, strategic planning, practical action, achievable goals, budgeting, skills and online visibility, alongside the partnerships and connections that supported her growth.
For female founders working towards seven figures, particularly those caught between ambitious targets and inconsistent income, this is a practical examination of what needs to underpin growth. You’ll be encouraged to move from waiting for circumstances to change towards a more deliberate approach, connecting daily decisions to clear financial goals and a business model that protects your time, energy and freedom.

Welcome to episode 89 of Dawn of a New Era. Now we're fast approaching the top 1% of global podcasts, and we've been sitting around top 2 to 3% global ranking shows since we launched. Now we're only a couple of years old. We have steadily grown our subscribers, and the exciting thing is, is that this year we're on a mission.
And this mission is twofold: to really, really ramp up our subscribers in our podcast and reach number one status, but more importantly, to reach as many people as we can to share our mission and vision. So as you may know, my name is Dawn McGruer, and I am the host of Dawn of a New Era and the Business Growth Coach. And I started my first business at 21, 43 now, and I'm seeing such a shift in the way that entrepreneurs are running their business. Now it lights me up in some ways because you see so many step forward and really, really are making big headway, you know, and growing the business in a way that is right for them.
Success is relative to you, and it doesn't necessarily mean, you know, big, big numbers. But one of the posts that I shared, and I think this is important to put out there, was all about how you feel, because I know that when I've been in situations whereby, you know, I'm not focused, I'm not getting the results I want, those things are not aligned. And alignment is a big piece. So if you're feeling like you're not doing enough or you're never going to get there, and it just feels like this uphill climb, we've all been there.
You know, I started my business and I spent, you know, the first 18 months, two years in feast and famine, couldn't really kind of get the traction I needed to get the clients, to grow my business, to get the cash flow. And you'll have heard in other episodes that I do that. For me, we really want to reposition our mind and focus, and it was the biggest turning point for growing my business. It is also for many clients that I meet.
So I'm here to tell you that it is possible and that it can happen faster than you think. And the good news is, is it took me a while to do, okay? I'm sharing all of my insights and helping business owners get there far, far quicker. Now, latest kind of client case studies that we've got, you may have seen some of the case studies that we've done that we switched out online and on the website, dawnmcgruer.
com. But one lady's story, which is Victoria Morley, you'll have maybe seen on social media and a bit more recently. And the fascinating thing was is that she'd stepped out of corporate. She was about 14 months into her new business, and she literally went from zero clients and started, you know, getting a steady, consistent income.
And when I met her 14 months in, she also had a newborn baby. Biggest shift that she went through was her business model and really kind of nailing that, making sure that we had something that was recurring. The amount of clients sometimes that I see people, you know, try and put onto their strategy and their targets list is unreal. And the thing is, is sometimes you just need to sense check and make sure that you are not trying to attain something that is unattainable or totally unachievable.
Because, you know, if you're selling something, you need to know that, you know, maybe gaining five or six clients or something a month seems, you know, reasonable, seems easy, it seems doable. If, however, you set yourself a task of maybe getting 100 clients, and maybe it is doable, but it could be, you know, if you have to do that each and every month, that's a lot of work and possibly not realistic. So if it is possible to get there faster, how do we do it? Well, one of the stories I've told is that, you know, when I launched a new business, decided to kind of switch tack, really kind of, you know, go through kind of the barriers, everything that was in my mind talking to me saying, Oh, just stay where you are.
I pushed past and decided to remodel. I started looking at my marketing, I looked at my messaging, and I really started to look at the money aspect. I looked at my time, my energy, and then started to look at, you know, what were the things that were going to make this possible, the things that were going to help me grow my business. So I ended up going from seven months, in seven months, I went from zero to 100K a month, and that's not even the best part.
You know, the best part is how I did it. You know, a lot of people will say, you know, was it really difficult? It wasn't, because once I'd got the foundations in place and I was super focused on the marketing, whereby I was only thinking about every single day what my targets were, I was only doing actions that related to it, it wasn't that hard. So this is what I did, the following, you know, steps.
These are very simple. First of all, I had to kind of think, well, it's time for me to start, you know, moving past some of the mind monkeys. And, you know, you have to think this yourself, that if you're growing a business, it's time for you to start believing in yourself and your potential. And sometimes we limit that, we cap it because we're comfy, we're safe.
Sometimes we feel that we don't deserve it, or it's not for us, it's just not accessible. You know, we see people online doing bigger and better things, and we position them as, you know, kind of like, Oh, well, you know, I'd like to be them, but, you know, I can't. So you have to think about your success and make it relevant and relative to where you are in your journey, what your why is, what your purpose, what you want. If you want more time, don't go and do a business that's going to drain you of it.
If you want more freedom and flexibility, not tied down, think about having maybe different kind of products and services that don't mean that you need to be serving your clients each and every day, or more passive that people can access. So it's time for you to stop waiting around for some magical event or circumstance that is going to magically change your life forever, because it won't happen. I do meet lots of people, and we've probably all been there thinking, If I could just, if I could just, or if this just did this, we have to be. Totally in control and aware that our destiny is in our control, and that, you know, we can't wait for someone to rescue us.
We have to go and do it ourselves, regardless how painful sometimes it is to make those initial few steps. But as long as you're moving and you're taking one step, small steady steps build momentum and they get big results. So instead, take action today and use these seven steps and watch your life change before your eyes. So if you're ready and you really want to take your business to the next level, these seven steps are amazing.
So what you need to do is really focus on the first thing, and these are the things that I did, these steps. I focused on what my gaps were. So I've got a coach and a mentor. I needed that focus to take myself out of my business to give me the inspiration, to really chat through my strategy, to find out, you know, where I was at, because it's not just marketing, it's motivation and mindset.
And sometimes the biggest things I do with my clients is not just the business strategy. You know, most people know exactly what they want to do and they have an idea of how to get there, but there's blockers, there's barriers and success barriers that we have to break down, and these are present in everyone. You know, there's beliefs that we have and there's things that happen in our life that sometimes knock us or Change our confidence around something, that sometimes you just need a third party. Number two, create a game plan.
And a game plan is, what is it that we're going to do? Like, what is the strategy? Like, what is going to be the thing you're going to do? And make it really blooming well exciting.
Get these goals, right, and make them exciting, inspirational, and aspirational. And then create an action plan. You've got to break it down. I see lots of people saying, Well, you know, I just, I just want to get to this and do that, and if I can just get three clients.
But how are you going to get the clients? You can't just build a website, a sales page, or a lead magnet and expect people to go. We have to have a system. We have to have a way.
Now, there's three big growth drivers that I spoke about in one of my podcasts, and it's all to do with social media, email marketing, sales-first mentality, and within that sales-first mentality, having a model that works, okay? Because if you don't have that, the fundamentals, the business is broken. And I'm going as far to say that 75% of my clients, or the people I meet on my journey, that has been the issue that has stopped them getting to that next level of success. Number four, once you have got coach or mentor or some outside guidance, created a plan, got your action plan in place, set goals and make them achievable.
I use this spreadsheet with all my clients where basically it's called my magic model spreadsheet. It allows them to work out based on the products and services, how many clients they need to hit the targets, and to see if, you know, they're going to live the life that they set the business up for. It's a really important task, knowing your numbers, breaking them down not just monthly, not just weekly, but daily. Knowing exactly what you have to do to connect to, and having strategies in place that you can visualize your progress so you can really attach to them.
Create a budget, right? Number five is a big one. Create a budget and stick to it. You can't just go and market and think, well, I'm running ads or I'm doing this, without understanding, you know, how much does it take to actually deliver the product or service?
How much time? How long is it going to take? What is the cost versus the revenue? Because every business has a running profit.
Now, for me, every single business I run or work with my clients on, we're always striving to hit around about 80% profit for an online business. And that's totally achievable if you
If you get your money right and you get your marketing right, then those are the three things I work on each and every day. Number six, develop your skills and build an online presence. Sounds simple, but, you know, if you're an expert in X, Y, and Z and you have to now delve into tech and marketing, it's difficult. You know, if it's not your area of expertise naturally, or you've never done it and you've come out corporate, someone talking to you about doing your social media, setting up sales pages and funnels sounds like a foreign language, right?
So invest in the skills. Find out what you have to do. Maybe outsource the things you're not an expert in and build an online presence through consistency: social media, email marketing, sales-first mentality, having a route every day that you know you're bringing new people into your world, those people who you're nurturing through to becoming paying customers and knowing that if you're using social media, your connections are turning into paying clients. And last but not least, number seven.
Establishing partnerships and making connections. This has been the biggest growth factor. Knowing the right people could be that because I want to outsource something and I want a really solid person to join my team to do it. Could be that I want to get referral partners in place who feel that by, you know, one of their clients benefiting from my service is going to help them grow their business and pay a commission on it.
Looking at my connections and the people within my audience. So looking at how I grow my audience, looking at my connections, my community, and having peers that I can also be inspired by. And that brings me back straight to number one. And the reason that I set up this business and went from seven months, went to seven figures, was because I wanted to build something that fitted what I wanted to do.
So masterminds were one of them. And, you know, success from the Soul Mastermind for me just felt completely aligned, and it makes it easier to market. And then on the other side, working one-to-one, it was something that I am very passionate about. You know, when I do Marketing Money Map days and I map out a company's entire customer journey, and this can be individuals, teams, etc.
