7 Ways to Reprogramme YOUR Sub-Conscious for Better Habits
What if better habits began with noticing your patterns, rather than putting yourself under more pressure? When negative self-talk and familiar triggers shape your daily choices, wanting to change is only the beginning. Building a different routine means understanding what drives your behaviour, setting achievable goals and giving yourself the support to keep going.
In this solo episode, Dawn McGruer explores seven ways to reprogramme your subconscious for better habits, moving from self-awareness and clear goals to accountability, resilience and consistency. She shares practical approaches including journalling, visualisation, positive reinforcement and habit stacking, alongside the importance of designing an environment that supports your intentions. Throughout, she emphasises patience, self-compassion and adjusting your approach when something is not working.
For female founders who want to show up differently in business and life, this episode offers a practical starting point for changing everyday patterns. You will take away a shift from expecting yourself to get everything right immediately towards building habits through deliberate, manageable actions, with room to learn from setbacks rather than judge yourself for them.

And then there are five amazing, and I mean amazing, other prizes to be won. So you have got six chances to get in here. So please make sure that you do this now. And in this episode 131, I'm going to be sharing with you something that I find fascinating.
We're going to be looking at reprogramming the self-conscious to develop better habits. Now, every single day, each and every one of us is always striving in our own personal development. We want to show up better. We want to eat better.
We want to live better. We want to feel better. We just want to be happier. And with all of this comes good habits.
So we're going to look at how we do this. And there's some simple techniques that can really revolutionise your whole life. And I mean it from the heart here, because these may sound simple, but they make a big difference. And this is what I love about it, because when we think about our subconscious, it's really easy to kind of get caught up in the fact that, you know, we might have negative self-talk.
We tell ourselves that we shouldn't be doing certain things. We tell ourselves that we can't do certain things, that we're not capable. But the thing is here is you have no immediate access to what actually resides in your subconscious, because it controls 95% of how you think, react and behave, and the actions you you take and the way that you perceive life. So think about that for a minute.
You don't immediately control 95% of what you do in this world. And that's crazy when you think about it, isn't it? You know, we assume that we are taking the lead and the control, but what we actually have to do is we have to retrain and rewire our brain to reprogram it so we can change our habits and change the patterns that maybe are causing us to have bad habits. So the first one we're going to look at is self-awareness.
So start by becoming more aware of your current habits and the triggers that actually lead you to them. So two ideas I've got for you are journaling. Now, journaling, keeping a daily log of your habits, noting the circumstances and emotions that are associated with them, and also mindfulness meditation. So practicing mindfulness to become more attuned to your thoughts and feelings.
And you don't have to make this complicated. This can be as simple as just sitting and becoming aware, closing your eyes and thinking about these situations, bringing them into your conscious. And number two is to set clear goals. So define the habits that you want to develop and also the reasons behind them.
And think about SMART goals. So ensure that your goals are very specific, they're very measurable, they're achievable. You know, that has to be a key part of it. But they're also relevant and also time-bound.
So think about what you want to do, a specific goal within a time period, and think about how you'll measure whether you're actually achieving it and whether indeed it is actually achievable. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. And then another idea could be visualization. So visualizing the positive outcomes of adopting new habits.
And then number three, creating a plan. So with everything, we know a goal without a plan is just a wish. But developing a strategy to integrate these new habits into your daily routine is paramount. If you don't, we won't do it.
Now, one idea could be routine building. So identifying specific times or contexts where you can practice these new habits. And then another one could be environment design. So looking at modifying your environment to support these new habits.
So placing healthy snacks within easy reach, keeping fruit on your desk, you know, whatever it's going to be. And then number four, positive reinforcement. And I love this one. So reinforce your efforts through positive feedback.
So things like rewards. We all love rewards. So treat yourself with small rewards when you successfully practice the new habit. And then affirmations.
Ah, this is definitely one that I use a lot with clients, and using positive affirmations to bolster your self-belief. Now, creating just an easy sentence. Mine is just waking up every day and saying out loud to myself in the mirror, I am a healthy, wealthy, happy woman. Why do we do this?
And do words really mean anything? Of course they do, because we're setting the scene. We're taking ourselves into a new state of positivity. We're starting the day with the energy that we want to flow through the day.
And by positioning these thoughts, we're making our brains conscious of them. We're bringing our minds into the reality of what we want. So. If you've never tried this, step out of your comfort zone a little bit and try it, and just try your own sentence.
Say it every day and see and feel the difference, and it's a game changer. It really is. Now, number five is accountability, so holding yourself accountable to stay on track. So having a support system, so you could be sharing your goals with friends or family and request their support, and then tracking progress.
This could be an option, so using apps or habit trackers to monitor your progress. Now, this is exactly why I created the Growth Coach app, and it's free to download in any of the stores, Apple or Google, and you can do a 30-day challenge. So if you need help thinking about retraining and rewiring your brain, why not jump on, get the app, and then subscribe to do the 30-day challenge, and I'll be there on the other side cheering you on and helping you. Now, within this, the app has trackers, and you can use lots of different ways to track this.
You could use our app, you could use other apps you're using. But what we want to do is really lean into having something that makes you conscious of your progress, but also keeps you on track for continued success. Okay, so number six: resilience and adaption. Staying resilient and adaptable in the face of setbacks.
Tough one, I know, but self-compassion. This has to be at the heart of everything we do. We have to be kind to ourselves, even when you experience setbacks and view them as an issue. We need to switch that thought.
Give them as learning opportunities, and then maybe adjustment. So this idea looks at modifying your plan if certain strategies aren't working as expected, and thinking about being fluid and dynamic in your approach to habits. Not everything will work first time. You know, we're not superhuman.
We are amazing people, but some things work for us and some things don't. If you've set a goal or you've tried to put a habit in place and it doesn't quite work, be prepared to test and try something new. And then, last but not least, seven. And this is the hub of all success in all areas of our work and lives, and it's consistency.
Now, consistency is key in forming these new habits. So habit stacking, I love this, and this is about associating the new habit with an already very established one. So it could be, for instance, like flossing right after you are brushing your teeth, something that you're already doing and add something onto it. So you're not putting a new time schedule in, you're just elongating it slightly, and you're attaching it to something that's already successful, an already good habit in your life.
And then persistence. Now, committing to these practices and committing to practicing the new habit daily, even when it's challenging. And one of the things you've got to remember: not one person anywhere in the world has nailed everything in one go. It just doesn't happen.
And when we're looking at reprogramming the self-conscious for better habits, it really is a gradual process, and it does absolutely require patience, effort, and persistence. And I just want to wish you the best of luck on your journey to self-improvement, because even if you applied one of these changes, I know how magical it can be, and in terms of making the impact, and you will start to feel and behave differently, literally in a matter of 24 hours. So you don't have to do all of them. Just try and break them down.
And remember. The competition. Not only have we got the new rebrand, we've got some amazing episodes coming up, we've got some fabulous guests coming on, but we've got this competition for you and six amazing prizes.
